In addition to our on-going key initiatives, the Foundation has helped launch and support a variety of programs and projects that expand access, enhance visitor experiences, and preserve important community resources.
Bikes for Rental Stations
For many people, riding a bike is something they've done their entire lives. Others have never had the opportunity to learn or access a bicycle of their own. Through its Community Engagement programs, Three Rivers Park District helps people of all ages develop safe riding skills and confidence.
The Foundation raised funds to purchase more than 70 bicycles and safety equipment to support the District's planned bike rental stations in several parks. As these stations come online, this investment will help more people experience the joy of riding and exploring our parks.
Assisted Hearing Systems
Programs at Three Rivers nature centers inspire curiosity, learning, and a deeper connection to the outdoors. To help ensure every participant can fully engage in these experiences, the Foundation funded the purchase of eight new assisted hearing systems.
Each system includes a microphone for the naturalist and 25 individual headsets for participants. These systems are now available for use at Three Rivers nature centers, improving accessibility and helping more visitors hear, learn, and connect with the natural world.
Immersive Children's Area
As part of the transformation of Mississippi Gateway Regional Park and the construction of the Gateway Center, Three Rivers Park District created a vibrant new destination for visitors.
The Foundation funded the development of an indoor immersive children's area where children of all abilities can explore the Mississippi River, learn about the dam, and discover the fish, wildlife, and natural systems that make this place unique. Through interactive exhibits and hands-on experiences, young visitors can connect with the river in fun and meaningful ways.
Explorer Camps
Summer camp and outdoor learning experiences can be life-changing, creating opportunities to build friendships, make lasting memories, and develop meaningful connections to nature.
One of the Foundation's earliest initiatives was funding a van that allowed Three Rivers Park District to bring nature programs and Explorer Camps directly to local parks and neighborhoods, expanding access for people who might not otherwise have the opportunity to participate. Over the years, thousands of participants have experienced nature camps and outdoor learning opportunities through this program.
The success of Explorer Camps demonstrates the lasting impact of Foundation support. What began as a Foundation-funded initiative has grown into a valued District program that is now fully funded by Three Rivers Park District.
Directed Support
As the 501(c)(3) nonprofit philanthropic partner to Three Rivers Park District, the Foundation helps donors support special projects that enhance parks, preserve important resources, and create meaningful experiences for visitors.
One example is the stabilization of the historic Schmid Farmhouse ruins at Lake Minnetonka Regional Park. Recognized by the State Historic Preservation Office as a significant historic site, the ruins offer a unique connection to the area's past.
Through a generous gift from Schmid family descendant Douglas Schmid, the ruins have been stabilized and interpretive signage helps share the history of this site with park visitors for generations to come.
